Easter Congress!

Easter Congress at SCBA was epic as usual.

Kai Cong had stuff on, so I was playing with Jie Yang :P

The first round, we lost 8-25 (not too bad a start), which is 10-20 in VPs.

This is mostly because Muyun refuse to lead spade after Xin Chen overcalled in spades and opponents ended up in 3NT without

a spade stop -.- from vulnerable -2 to =, and 13IMP swing become push board ._.

For people wondering why there was no spade lead at my table, it's because I opened 2C and ended in 3NT without bidding

spades XD

Somehow our opponents reported 10-20 in IMPs which converted to 12-18 in VPs, somewhat a substitute for fail :P

Second round was most lousy, I faildeclare once and 3H= become 3H-4 (vulnerable) ._. and bid a random 3D that was downing

(vulnerable again). Needless to say, got 0-25 o.o

Third round was also lousy, because we are noob and our opponents were pro. The end result was 1-25.(we got 1 VP :O)

During break:

Me: Hey KSJ! You're taller than LKH! :O

KSJ: Of course! :D <-- lol

Fourth round I sat out and watched Yulin and Yining play. They were OK, except for a random 1NT-5 (non-vul) which looks

super wierd and supposed to make o.o The third round,, we got 2-25. (more VPs!)

You can more or less expect where this is going. The fifth round was against the U21 team and we played ok-ish. We got fed

a vulnerable 3Sx+1, but somehow that happened on the other board too o.o A miscomm with Jie Yang led to missing a

vulnerable game, but nothing spectacular beyond that. Sadly, we missed our target =( and got 5 VPs instead. GG no more AP

Sixth round was against LL Wong's team, and I had originally arranged for Muyun to be at his table, but somehow he left

already so Yulin and Yining got to play (lol). I was tabling with Mr Paul Tan (dear physics tutor, not mine though) and

somehow felt they weren't very good compared to all the other people we played against. They had some miscomms, and we had

a fair share of ours too, but somehow in the end we got 9 VPs (more than expected!)

Seventh round was against RI seniors, and somehow one of them was late so a pair was substituted for Yao Yang and Xin Chen

(not my teammate lolz). There was 1 interesting board, where my LHO opened 1D, Jie Yang doubled for takeout and with 11

points i bid 2S (my spades were 9874 speak of quality yea). Jie Yang raised to 4S, and spawned me AQ5 spades. While 3NT is

cold here, 4S was not making on their defense, but somehow they misdefended in the end and I made. The other table was

3NT=, and we got 1 IMP from a random miscomm (lolol). We lost 5 overtrick swings, won the 4S/3NT IMP and a game swing

(woot) so we basically won 17-13 (yayayayay).

Eighth round was sit out, so we were epic slacking around and doing nothing in particular.

Ninth round I wasn't playing, because Xin Chen wanted Yulin and Yining to play (which I didn't object to). I ended up

kibbing KSJ's very exciting match with KKBC :P Our score was 9-21, but only because Yulin and Yining missed a slam, and

didn't even bid the game >.< content to let opponents play 3C-1 o.O

My partner, Kai Cong is epic win at bridge.
For some reason he hates 1NT sequences, and likes to get them wrong. Forgetting transfers and inviting with 10 points aside, he also Staymaned with 5 card major and such.
However, the most win thing is everytime he does something wrong, it turns out with good result.

Example, today. I opened 1NT (15-17) holding:

He invites with 2NT. He should Stayman first, then raise to 4S, the correct contract.
However, this board was super lame. Due to bad breaks in both black suits and all my finesses offside, the best we can do is 8 tricks in notrump, achieved only by and endplay to my LHO.

Godlike ftw.

PCME - The Card Game

Everyone knows about poker cards, and how they're associated with gambling and blah blah blah.

However the school as absolutely the wrong idea. We play card games like bridge just to have fun, not much difference from Monopoly Deal (which is allowed, and can be rented from the council room).

Somehow the school (and our beloved principal) has the impression that all visitors will have the misconception that playing with poker cards = gambling, and visitors will be lame enough to make negative inferences at every opportunity.

That's where PCME comes in :P

I don't know when it started, but some time ago seniors started this cool concept of replacing each poker card with a certain school topic. In that way, we can play cards (cleverly) disguised as revision notes. <-- yay!

Dreams for 2011!

We all have our dreams; they are what keep us going, even in the darkest days of our lives, like a gleaming beacon in the darkness. The hope of one day the sky will clear and the sun shining bright is what we all hold dear in our hearts; the hope that one day, our dreams will come true.

My dreams for 2011~

1. Straight A for H2 subjects! (and hopefully for PW, but that doesn't matter nearly as much XD)
2. Top 30 for Singapore Mathematical Olympiad! (hard due to open round, but RAWR)
3. Pwn people at bridge! =DDDD
4. Get Gold for Singapore Chemistry Olympiad! (hard also, but RAWR x2)

But dreams are one thing, to work consistently towards them is another...
I promised myself last year, and I'll do it again...
For the brilliant future ahead~

For people who don't know, I keep a list of SMO scores and ranking every year for future reference.
There are a few people who I'm interested in their mathematics standard, since it seems to be rather high (Yulin and Keying) but I don't really know them very well so I cant gauge by myself.
Thats where SMO results come in; of course its not a very good gauge, since it varies with the paper of that year, but I do get a rough idea of their standard.

Interestingly, I didn't find the people I was actually looking for; not that surprising because I know the PRC scholars in my batch are not very good at mathematics. On the other hand, I did find Lien (my angel) on the 2010 open category top 30 list (in fact she was 21st). That is rather interesting, because I never remembered her mentioning anything significant about mathematics in our letters.

Further investigation (stalking o.O) reveals that she's very brilliant at mathematics; 2008 Senior 7th and Open 14th, 2009 Senior 23rd, 2010 Open 21st. Strangely, I don't have any of her records before 2007, which I'll assume means she joined NYGH in S3. I did remember that 2008 Senior and Open papers were rather easy and 2009's paper was freaky hard, which pretty much explains her fluctuations in results, but its still very awesome -.-".

Anyway, all of this leaves me pretty speechless about myself -.-
I promised myself to get into top 30 in Open category this year, and this seems even more important now :P

Then again, after getting demoralized from AIME, sienzorxxxxx
Nevermind that, I will get what I promised to, just you wait for it!

HC Cup =C

But they were lucky and our seniors were not, so too bad. Like KSJ put it, 万事俱备，只欠东风. We needed the east wind =/
But that's the seniors' problem, not mine.

I am however rather upset over our last match with ACJC. I had played 3 rounds already and I wanted to take a break from thinking about bridge, take a look at the International Chess side and slack a bit in general, so I let Xin Chen, Muyun, Benjy and FX play against ACJC. I was sure they sucked (letting me make a 22 pt 3NT, ducking randomly for no reason, other fails) so probably a 25 vp round, so I was pretty relaxed. I was however nervous for Peter's team who was playing against RJC in the finals.

Then after the round finished, I went to check the scores, and OMG 2-18 IMPs and 10-20 vps. I was pretty speechless, and felt really bad about slacking off >.<
Further I heard about the 7!D-1 and it was GG. A slam swing to RJC for 16 IMPs resulted in the end score 40-28 >.< if it were a push they would have gotten champion for bridge -.-

So I felt super bad, and went to emo in some corner. Then TZH and Joseph called me over and passed me ACJC's bidding notes. I saw it and omg it was so lousy -.- and they asked how could we lose to them. When they played their score was 86-0 ._. and we got 2-18...... I really didn't know what to say as team captain; whether I should hold myself responsible or to just say "I wasn't playing against them"

TZH actually said "They left a present for you after you lost to them 10-20 so you can understand their bidding system." ......

Joseph: "The purpose of giving you this piece of paper is so that you remember what it feels like to lose." ......

............ I actually felt like crying and I went to hide behind the whiteboard and (didn't cry) emoed. Then I walked around the room for 20 minutes with my mind spinning before I went home.

............ But whatever. The past is the past, and what's important is that we head towards our futures... next year we will get back the HC Cup; that is our promise.
